Renewing Measure A: Flexibility in Funding Marin’s Parks and Agriculture

Summary – Measure A, a voter-approved quarter-cent sales tax, has become one of Marin County’s most important sources of funding for parks, open space, and sustainable agriculture. Today, Measure A provides approximately half of Marin County Parks’ funding, and the department would look fundamentally different without it. In this report, we reach two conclusions regarding the future of Measure A: First, we conclude that future renewals should provide all funds to Marin County Parks and allow Parks staff greater flexibility to address changing needs, rather than include fixed formulas for community grants, locality grants, and wildfire prevention. Second, we conclude that voters should be allowed to vote on sustainable agriculture funding independently from parks and open space funding
